If you are not given a copy of your Employment Contract, is it void?

I have begun a new contract at my place of employment beginning August 2007. I signed the contract in September, and was told they were running off a copy for me. It has been 5 months and I am still yet to see a contract. I am afraid they may alter it because they have altered documents before. I talked to Administration personally and told them I want a copy. I was very firm, while still professional. What should I do!!!
