How do stores Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister and Jack Wills get away with employing only good looking people?

I can’t see how they get away with this, isnt this discrimination?

My youngest daughter (20) works there and I’m sure she’d appreciate that. But to your question I’d have to say the people who have the big $$$ to shop there should be entitled to look attractive sales ladies. Sort of like when you visit your doctors, you don’t want to see some fat-assed nurse! Right?

Not everyone who works there is good looking. Discrimination is if they would only hire white people, not black people. Not if they are "ugly" or "hot". Plus, people have their own opinions on how people look. Some may think they are all ugly.

    No.

Is it illegal for agencies to only sign talented and good looking models? No.

A&F and these outlets have a particular look – they cater to a specific audience or crowd, and so it makes sense that those working there need to be a representative of that look.

It’s a private business – they can choose to hire whoever they want. And they’re never going to tell you that you weren’t hired because you weren’t attractive enough. They’ll simply tell you that you "weren’t qualified for the position".

This shouldn’t be a surprise. Stuff like this happens all the time — it happens in other businesses, too — where people are expected to deal with the public. Sales people tend to be beautiful/attractive. It isn’t a coincidence.

It’s not discriminating unless on the ‘Hiring’ signs they write, ‘no uglies allowed’. I guess it’s kinda like, you can’t be a shampoo salesperson if you’re bald. But that’s just in your area, I’m sure that somewhere in the world, there’s an ‘ugly’ person working at these stores.

of course, people have their own opinions.
some people may not think they are attractive or unattractive,
but those stores want generally good looking people to represent their store.
say, if you look at their models, they aren’t going to be unattractive, because that won’t sell clothes very well, same with in the stores.

A & F already had a lawsuit because they would hire small numbers of Hispanics, Blacks and Asians. Apparently they ARE hiring more people of colors, and they are gaining more diversity. I guess all stores are different, but I usually see black and Asian guys & girls working there a lot more now. I don’t see too many Hispanics there, but I do notice that when it comes to their ads & posters (models) they still hire many Whites only…

No, it’s just to keep with their "look". I really like the one answerer’s example of no one wanting their nurse/doctor being fat!
